Chrysarmonia is an female fronted Alternative Hard Rock Band from Italy (Milan).
The meaning of their artistic intention is already on the name of the band (Chrysalis + Armonia), a sort of growth, a change, a metamorphosis. Although the members of the band have been musically active for a decade, Chrysarmonia are actually born in December 2018.
Their sound is not easily categorized and this makes them even more interesting.
So let's discover this band and their EP "Metamorphosis"...

Hello guys and welcome to the pages of Rockers And Other Animals. It's with great pleasure that I take this interview, because you're one of the bands that manages to distinguish itself for a very particular sound and not easy to label.
Do you want to start talking about yourself?

Hello Valeria, thank you for this opportunity.
Talk about us in a few words is not easy, we all have a different personality and musicality, perhaps this is our strength. But we are also very similar, in some ways. We are passionate musicians, we all have a very different job from music.

"Metamorphosis is your first work, how would you describe it? If you were to assign a mood to your work to be able to describe it, what would it be and why?

Vania: “Metamorphosis” was born as my personal need. I feel very lucky, because my companions immediately interacted with my feelings and my ideas, which come from personal experiences. Empathy between us is very strong.
Till now, I am the only one who writes the songs (music and lyrics). I had these songs to "pull out" and when the boys listened to them, they all found themselves a bit. Each of us has contributed on the song’s arrangement, which all speak of a true state of mind and experiences. Moments that I lived very intensely.

Do you have similar or different music background?

More than background, better say attitude: Vania is a Soul voice, Davide is a Blues guitarist, Fabio is definitely a Metal drummer, while Simone, who is the one with more musical experience, is an eclectic bass player, he can really play any musical genre, he has 360 °background.

Your next step is to release an album within the next year, do you already have some tracks ready? If so, can you anticipate something?

Our intention is to release an LP by the end of 2020 with an important production. "Evolution", this is the name we have already chosen, will contain at least 10 tracks, including the four of "Metamophosis" EP rearranged and remastered, and another 6 new ones.
For the first of these 6 new tracks (Fast) the production will start in about a month. There are already another 2-3 songs under development, including one in Italian language (Anima Nera).

What is the most challenging part of writing the music?

Vania: It is not easy to answer. Our music comes from emotions and therefore comes to us instinctively, sometimes completely, usually only a part of the song, for example the chorus or the reef. From here we start, and the song comes out very naturally without thinking too much about it. I think the difficulty lies in allowing oneself moments of freedom from everyday problems, so that inspiration can come. Yes, this is difficult. Usually it comes during the night around 4 am while I'm sleeping. I always have my phone nearby and I can record the melodies, thankfully.

What are your influences and what inspires you in composing your songs?

Vania has composed our songs to date. Her influences are clearly Alter Bridge and especially Myles Kennedy. But it also draws heavily from classical music, from the classics of Soul, or from the 80s Hard Rock. As previously written, each of us has different influences and legacies ... Blues, Metal, Soul, Classical ...

Arrangement, lyrics and melody, which is most important to you?

Granted answer, but obviously all in equal parts. We add Dynamics which is the song’s "breath" and it is very important if you really want to transmit emotions. We really try to consider each of these factors in every song, because they are all necessary to excite ourselves, and consequently people who are listen to us.

"Victims" has a very deep sound with great bass pleasure, how did this track come about?

Vania: I'm glad you like it, because I think it's the most complex song I've composed so far. The inspiration came one morning at the Bar, while I was having breakfast, a lady kept complaining about everything: her husband, her son, her son's school ... in short, she had no serious problems, but she dumped her complaints without realizing that the only problem was herself. So, Victim was born ... dedicated to those who have no problems but want to create some to feel alive in some way.
I like to create my songs with an instrument that dominates the scene, more evident than the others. Just like you said before, on “Victim”the bass is very important, with his solo.

Even "I Knows Who I Am" impressed me in a particular way, would you like to tell us about these two songs in particular?

This track is really personal, even if everyone can find themselves in that experience. It speaks of broken wings, of unexpressed art, of impediments. For me it was my adolescence, it was between 80s and 90s a lot of drugs turned up and there was also the AIDS boom, especially the Rockstar’s that we adolescents loved. Rock and music in general and concerts, were considered the entrance of hell by parents. Even my parents decided that I shouldn't have strange ideas in my mind, so at 14 they didn't allow me to study music anymore, they forbade me from attending art school, and they put me in a squalid Technical-Commercial institute, where there is no space for any kind of art. At 15 I tried suicide: I felt suffocated, I no longer breathed without music and art, and I swear, I never smoked a cigarette in my life, I was always a good girl :-) Fortunately, I didn't succeed and everything came back into normal life, as if it had never happened, but I had changed. Apathy and silence took over in my life. As long as I found Davide, 2 years after the fact. We are together since 1991.
"I know who I Am" came out of my chest on a sunny day last summer (2018). I was happy, I was walking in the sun, and the rhythm of my steps was the refrain’s basis, and the words "I know Who I Am" cadenced, gave me a new first breath, like a new birth. It was very exciting, I think I cried. Perhaps after almost 30 years I have metabolized that fact.

I know it's a foregone question, but why did you choose to make a cover of Alter Bridge’s "Calm The Fire"?

I owe a lot to Alter Bridge and especially to Myles Kennedy. Their music gave me the courage to do what I've always avoided: combining my natural soul voice with Metal or Hard Rock. “Calm the Fire” is the perfect song for me, very difficult to play and to sing, that even AB avoid playing it during their lives.

You've been playing for several years, you debuted last year, how did you feel about the approach to the music business in Italy?

It depends on what you expect. We are optimistic and Italy is no different from other countries. There is a lot of Underground, good, great bands. Different Festivals where to perform, and many web radios that are interested in your unpublished music.
Of course, we must forget the glories of the 80s and 90s. There is no longer any musical business, if someone thinks of making money with music, they will be disappointed. You have to consider it in terms of artistic satisfaction, expression and well-being. I believe that man cannot live without his artistic side. It is true for those who make art, but also for those who benefit from it.

On June 28th you'll play at the Alcatraz in Milan for Emergenza Festival Italian Final.
We remind you that it is the biggest contest in the world for emerging bands and musicians.
How did you get to this festival and how do you feel?

We saw the competition announcement this winter, we simply registered. We passed our preliminaries to Legend Club of Milan coming first, getting in prize to play at the Hiroshima in Turin. We passed the Semifinals, always at Legend Club, finishing second in the standings and thanks to this we are in the Italian Final at the Alcatraz. A great experience on the most important stages of Italy.

Thank you for your time in answering these questions. Is there anything in particular you would like to add to conclude?

Keep trying and never give up! Rock on!

Good luck at the Finale Emergenza Festival!
Thank you so much for your time.
