Did you ever read a book greedily during a move? Well I have and every moment was good to open "Girogirotondo - Codex latitudinis" by Edoardo Bennato.
Can I say that it's one of the three Italian songwriters I love?
I still remember the day when at the age of 10 I listened to Bennato's "Sono solo canzonette", it was the moment when Edoardo became my island that doesn't exist, a place to take refuge. I saw him in concert more than once, the last one in Mantua at the theatre.
Ironic, sharp and desecratory, Bennato released the single "La realtà non può essere questa", with his brother Eugenio, inspired by Covid 19, or rather the pandemic, another single "Ho fatto un selfie", the new album is coming out and he made his debut as a writer with "Girogirotondo. Codex Latitudinis", published by Baldini & Castoldi.
In this book the artist tells and makes us reflect by offering notes, reflections, elements, and geopolitical analysis in a book divided into three parts with eighteen chapters in total, with illustrations of his paintings, maps and photos. Edoardo's life with Neapolitan roots, memories of a happy childhood and the sacrifices of his parents, his career, starting from his first steps, passing through the University of Architecture in Milan, the city where he managed to enter the 'serious' world of showbiz.
What is very interesting in this book, in addition to his artistic life, is precisely the side of world political and geopolitical analysis.
A clear civil consciousness on topics such as racism, political corruption (always well highlighted in the lyrics of his songs), the social gap. All this is the focus of two, of the three parts of the book in which Edoardo expresses himself.
Let's find the lyrics of his songs in which they take sides in favour of the socially excluded and immigrants, where the 'villains in power' and not only them, are spurred to be more altruistic, more socially active in making society fairer and annihilating those planetary imbalances from which the world suffers.
In short, ideologically an invitation to the Western world to overcome fear and selfishness, because there is always fear of the foreigner.
Right, ideology or possible reality?
An historical-geographical excursus concludes the book, illustrated by an extraterrestrial puppet named Koso, drawn by his daughter when she was a child. It is Koso who has the task of pointing
out the paths that humanity has reached by reaching the progress of our days and inviting everyone to embrace every latitude, both mental and physical.
Derisory, desecratory and winking, Bennato is a rocker who could be a punk character as he is subversive. Long life and thanks for the good vibe.
